Origin and History : From Popess to Priestess<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The High Priestess card is widely known from the Rider-Waite tarot deck. It is the card of intuition, inner wisdom, asking you to trust your inner voice. Part of the Major Arcana, it draws its origin from the early Italian deck of cards like the Visconti-Sforza Tarot, where it appeared as \u201cLa Papessa,\u201d symbolizing <\/em>unconventional knowledge. As tarot came to the limelight. the Tarot de Marseille standardized her image, where she wore the triple-tiered papal crown and held a book, representing “Mother Church” or “Secret Wisdom”. In order to avoid any religious friction this imagery was often swapped with the Roman Goddess – Juno, in the Swiss decks while in other she was seen as “The Spanish Captain”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, occult thinkers like Arthur Edward Waite and artist Pamela Colman Smith transformed her into spiritual archetype – The High Priestess, stripping way the Catholic labels, portraying subconscious truths. As the guardian of the subconsciousness and the bridge between the known and unknown, she is not asking you to rush into things but rather act with patience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One we still use today was given by Pamela who designed her between the two pillars – Jachin (white) and Boaz (black) from Solomon’s Temple, denoting the dualities of life (logic vs intuition).
